Western Canada High considers team name change

Western Canada High School is considering scrapping its “Redmen” team name.

The Calgary Board of Education released a statement Wednesday, saying they were exploring a new athletics logo and name, as the old one may no longer be appropriate.

The board also encouraged “all principals and school officials to review school names, mascots and logos to ensure that they are respectful” of the wider community.

The name originally referred to the red uniforms the school’s teams wore in 1923, but a logo added four decades later, and still used today, depicts a native person.

The debate comes after a Saskatoon public school recently got rid of the ‘Redmen’ name out of respect for First Nations.
