Coyote mating season poses risk for pets

Pet owners beware.
A rise in the amount of coyote attacks is likely.
On Thursday, a woman in Edmonton was surrounded by a pack of coyotes and one of her dogs ended up injured in the incident.
Mating season means there will be more coyotes out in local parks and on city streets.
Tom Biglin, district Fish and Wildlife officer for Calgary, said if someone confronted by one or many coyotes, they should take action.
“Keep them on the leash, with the extended leashes people use now, bring that dog in right beside you and just walk away” he said.
He said it will help to carry bear spray and an air horn when going out.
Attacks on humans are very rare but he said dogs can be seen as either a source of food or a threat.
He said an owner should never let their dog loose in a wooded area where coyotes can be hiding.
