Former city alderman passes away

One of Calgary’s longest-serving alderman has passed away.
Barb Scott was 83.
She was elected in 1971 to represent the citizens of Ward 8 and was subsequently re-elected seven times.
Former Ward One Alderman Dale Hodges told 660News, he sat next to Barb for a number of years.
“She was a very determined person, she definitley had the courage of her convictions and she would always let you know where she was at. She was not by any means, a shrinking violet,” Hodges said.
Last year, the city announced plans to name a Beltline park, the Barb Scott Park in her honour.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi issued a statement saying he was very sad to hear about her passing.
In the statement Nenshi writes:
Her success in championing improved social conditions, better urban design, and cultural diversity helped shape many of the vibrant communities that now exist in our city. She was a pioneering urbanist and the communities she represented benefited from her vision and drive. Even after retirement, she continued building our city through acting as a citizenship judge and, in her later years, organizing community cafes in her neighbourhood.
Barb Scott was an inspiration to all of us. Her commitment, passion, and vision, her dedication to the citizens of Calgary, will continue to inspire us even after her passing.
I will miss her. We all will.
