Naheed Nenshi is the highest paid mayor in the country

Calgary’s mayor now makes more than any of his peers.

Naheed Nenshi is now the highest paid mayor in Canada.

This, after city council received a pay raise that quietly went into effect New Year’s Day.

The 3.8 per cent increase follows a one year pay freeze in 2014.

It pushes Mayor Nenshi’s salary to more than $216 thousand while councillors make more than $115 thousand per year.

Ward 3 Councillor Jim Stevenson tells 660News, after his salary was frozen last year, he doesn’t have a probem with this year’s pay bump but adds, next year, his wages could actually be reduced.

“Who knows what this downturn is going to mean and if the average wage in Alberta goes down, then our wages go down,” says Stevenson.

The former mayor of Brampton, Ontario used to be the highest paid in Canada, but she stepped down amid a spending scandal and the city’s new mayor took a pay cut.
