The City of Calgary has come up with the final plan for the Currie Barracks in the city’s southwest, after public consultation in 2014.
Community members gathered at the Clear Water Academy Wednesday night to see what city experts came up with, and what they will be presenting to council at their next meeting.
Craig Sklenar, Senior Planner with the City of Calgary tells CityNews, the plan includes a mix of public and expert opinions.
“With any application, we have to find a balanced opinion. We still are having some high density areas but we’ve tightly controlled where those can actually occur. As well, we took some of the comments about open space and fed that into the overall design, which included the consolidation of some of the spaces and redesign.” said Sklenar.
He adds, “it’s a mixed use of urban re-development of Currie Barracks. It’s a nuanced version of what their application was, both on feedback from the community and consultation with city experts. We have refined that plan down to our recommendation of a variety of uses here in Currie Barracks.”
If the proposal is approved by city council, it would allow for a medium-density mix of retail, office, and residential space, along with a network of open spaces and pathways.
