City Council has rejected a bid to re-zone an upscale Italian restaurant in Kensington to include a larger business, a public plaza, and condo units.
The owner of Osteria de Medici on Kensington Road and 10th Street Northwest had applied to turn the property into a commercial and residential tower that would go two stories higher than the eight currently allowed.
Half a dozen Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association members came out to City Hall Monday night to speak against the project citing concerns over its design, access and road restrictions.
City Councillors rejected the bid by a vote of 8-6. Mayor Nenshi, Druh Farrell, Brian Pincott, Evan Woolley, Richard Pootmans, Gian-Carlo Carra, Diane Colley-Urquhart and Jim Stevenson voting against it.
Osteria de Medici would still be allowed to redevelop as a restaurant without a plaza or a as mixed use property that falls under the eight story restrictions.
