Canadians taking time off work to catch up on sleep: study

Forget Seattle — a number of cities in Canada are seriously sleepless.

A Sleep Centre study has found one in four people in the country or 3.9 million are calling in sick to catch up on sleep.

They estimate companies have lost almost three quarters of $1-billion in man hours because of it.

Calgary is the number eight most snooze-deprived city, with 67 per cent of us saying we have trouble catching z’s.

The top 3 are Kitchener, Saskatoon, and Vancouver.

Pain is the most common reason Canadians lie awake at night (46 per cent), followed by uncomfortable room temperature (31 per cent), and work stress (29 per cent).

Other reasons included: illness, partner snoring, too much caffeine and indigestion or heartburn.

The survey also asked Canadians where they find themselves nodding off: 72 per cent said on the couch, watching T.V.

However we aren’t just falling asleep at home: two in ten find their eyes fluttering on public transportation, or during classes or lectures.

One in six people sneak in a snooze at work, while 14 per cent fall asleep in their popcorn at the movies.

If you’re wondering what city you should envy, it’s Toronto.

Chris Herlihey, Vice President Research at IPG Mediabrands, says that’s because all of the other cities on the list have a higher percentage of kids living at home, while Ontario’s capital has more people hitting the pillow alone.
