Tourism Calgary expecting influx of visitors this summer

Stampede might be over, but Tourism Calgary expects our city will continue to attract visitors right through until the end of summer.

Vice President of Marketing Jeff Hessel tells 660News, the music festival season will soon kick off and that is a big draw.

Hessel says tourism marketing has evolved to the point where campaigns, especially on social media, are audience specific.

“So if you’re into sporting events, they want to see: what are the top seven sporting events taking place this summer? If they like music, they want to see: what are all the festivals that are taking place this summer?” Hessel said. “So, we’ve been grouping those things and that’s what we’re putting through on our website, through our social channels, and what our visitor information centres are talking to people about when they’re arriving to the city.”

It will be a particularly busy summer music festival season in Cowtown, with the Folk Festival at Prince’s Island Park, which will be followed by the International Blues Festival, Reggae Festival, Opera in the Village, and GlobalFest.

The tourism business in Calgary generated more than $1.7 billion in economic activity last year, employing some 70,000 people.
