Calgary’s mayor believes this could be the beginning of a new chapter for the East Village as he supports the demolition of the old Cecil Hotel.
It is slated for deconstruction on Tuesday Dec. 8 at 8:00 a.m.
The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation made the announcement Monday morning saying that demolition will take five to seven days.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi said that the Cecil has outlived its purpose.
“There are too many bad memories associated with that place. I’m actually not sad to see it come down,” Nenshi told reporters.
“I don’t want to trite about it. Bad stuff happened there and we should honour the memory of the folks that were there and what happened there, but it’s also time to not have places where bad stuff happens.”
Ward seven councillor Druh Farrell however had fought to save it even just a part of the old landmark.
“It has been severly impacted by the flood (of 2013) and the structure has been compromised,” Farrell said. “So, the best that CMLC could do at this point would be to save some of the bricks.”
At this stage there are no official plans for the inner city lot.
