One in five has suffered a concussion playing sports: study

One in five Canadians has suffered a concussion while playing sports, according to a new study.

A report by Angus Reid finds the majority of those head injuries are coming before the age of 18.

The effects of a concussion are usually temporary, and include headaches, vomiting, problems with concentration, memory and balance, but for a small group the symptoms can be long lasting.

The good news is the study shows there’s a higher level of reporting the injury than there was in the past, and more support and regulations aimed at monitoring and helping those who are hurt.

However, around half of those who’ve suffered a concussion still say they were never formally diagnosed.
