Even with a struggling Canadian economy and Black Friday sales now in Canada, Boxing Day still reigns supreme in the country.
Jeff Novak, a spokesperson with Red Flag Deals, told 660 NEWS, it all comes down to tradition.
“It’s something we’ve been doing in Canada for a long time,” Novak explained. “Unlike Black Friday, most Canadians have Boxing Day off. It’s a statutory holiday here in Canada, so people are out and about, they have time off, they can go line up in stores, they can log onto their computers quickly, and really spend a day shopping and looking for things.”
“Before Canadian retailers had to really be competitive to stop people from buying from the U.S. Now it’s not the case because the Canadian dollar is so low.”
He added, while Black Friday has seen an increased interest among Canadians, the sales are usually not as good as the ones on Boxing Day.
Here in Calgary, people proved Novak’s point, as malls were packed early Saturday morning with eager shoppers.
By 8 a.m., some stores in Chinook Centre were seeing lineups of 100 or more, with Lululemon Athletica and the Apple store being some of the busiest.
