Nenshi fields questions about refugee housing

Calgary’s Mayor is cooling concerns about settling Syrian refugees into housing in Calgary.

Councillor Sean Chu asked about the cut off of federal funding while in question period Monday, wondering who would pick up where the Canadian government leaves off in 2017.

A waiting list for affordable housing in the city is about 3,000 people long and Mayor Naheed Nenshi maintains they won’t be adding refugees to that queue.

Nenshi said the needs of refugees are “less complex” and once they are in place and find the right language learning resources, they tend to do quite well in the first year.

He said he’s only a “bit worried” about finding them initial housing.
