Monahan, Gaudreau and Bouma apologize for being scratched

Eyebrows were raised across the city and the NHL when Bob Hartley scratched Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau and Lance Bouma’s from Tuesday’s action versus Toronto. The coach explained it was for disciplinary reasons.

The players said they took the situation to heart and see the benching as a valuable lesson.

“We’re all men,” Monahan told the media on Wednesday. “We’ve got to take the consequence and learn from it and be better from it.”

The trio also apologized to their teammates, for letting them down.

“I think all three of us were really upset with ourselves,” Gaudreau said. “We want to apologize to the organization, the coaches, our team especially, and the city of Calgary and the fans. They come to watch us play every single night and for us not to show up like that, miss a game like that, it’s not professional on our part.”

The incident also caused extra embarrassment with their fathers, who are in Calgary to begin their annual dad’s trip.

“He said what any dad would say if their kid was in trouble or made a mistake,” Gaudreau stated. “Learn from it. Pay the consequences here and you’re a young kid and it’s something you need to learn from.”

Gaudreau leads the team in scoring with 49 points, followed by Monahan at 35.

The Flames begin a two-game road trip Thursday with a stop in San Jose and a Friday date in Arizona.
