It was all eyes and ears on Canadian music Thursday morning at Lord Beaverbrook High School, thanks to a special gift from the Junos.
Canadian artist and Juno nominee Alessia Cara was on hand to present the school’s music program with a $10,000 grant.
Heidi Wood, a music teacher at the school, told 660 NEWS, the money will go towards a new keyboard and accessories.
“What that allows us to do as a choir, is to be more easily portable, to be able to break off into practice rooms and have multiple instruments that students can use to help with their studies, and just make music more accessible in our building,” Wood said.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi also showed up for the event, which included a performance by Cara.
Allan Reid, president of CARAS, the Juno Awards and MusiCounts, says this is one of his favourite parts of the job.
“This is actually extra special, because we’re actually making our national announcement of the Band Aid program,” Reid said. “In that program, we give schools five and 10 thousand dollars for instruments.”
A total of 77 schools across the country are sharing $675,000 from the Junos to purchase instruments.
