Overdose death of 16-year-old girl leads to manslaughter charge against Calgary man

The death of a teen girl in Calgary last fall has led to what police say is the city’s first manslaughter charge in connection to a fatal drug overdose.

Calgary police say two 16-year-old girls met a 40-year-old man in downtown Calgary on Nov. 27.

The group later went to the man’s home along Centre Street North in the community of Beddington Heights, where investigators believe drugs were used.

The following morning at around 7:30 a.m. the man found one of the girls unconscious and called 911. Paramedics responded and tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy later determined the girl died from the toxic effects of carfentanil. She has been identified as 16-year-old Jordynn Atkins-Materi.

The Calgary Police Service’s Drug Investigations for Safer Communities (DISC) Team launched an investigation and determined that charges were warranted.

“This is a heartbreaking loss,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS Undercover Operations Unit. “Illicit drugs continue to have a devastating impact, particularly on vulnerable individuals in our community.”

Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins, 40, of Calgary, was arrested on Thursday and has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death. He is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Police say the incident marks the first time they have laid a manslaughter charge in connection with an overdose death in Calgary.

Anyone with information about drug trafficking in the city is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234, or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
