New Canada 150 sign unveiled at Prince’s Island Park

An early present for Calgarians as we approach the 150th anniversary of Confederation, a new 3D Canada 150 sign has been unveiled at Prince’s Island Park.

Dignitaries were led up to the stage by drummers from the Siksika Nation for the official ceremony.

Eighteen more signs that say “Canada 150” will be placed in other provincial and territorial capitals as well as some tourist hot spots over the coming weeks.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says this is a special moment for all Canadians.

“I’ve been doing a lot of Canada 150 stuff and it never gets old,” he told the crowd.

Federal Tourism Minister Bardish Chagger says there are many Canadians who don’t remember the past celebrations.

“We’re definitely focusing on our relationship, reconciliation with our indigenous peoples, we’re talking about the environment, we’re talking about youth, diversity, we’re celebrating all that Canada has to offer,” she said.

Chagger hopes the signs will create lasting memories of this once-in-a-lifetime type party, which marks our country’s sesquicentennial.
