Overnight snow a sign of things to come in Calgary

A dusting of snow dropped on the city overnight, now comes the heavy stuff.

A snowfall warning is in effect for Calgary and the areas to the north, south and west. A winter storm warning covers the Pincher Creek and Cardston regions.

Calgarians can expect another 5 to 10 centimetres of snow Thursday and a high of just minus 7, feeling more like minus 13.

Not to get too far ahead, but Meteorologist Andrew Schultz said the city can prepare for the same thing on Friday.

“If you want to be optimistic, at least we know what’s coming,” he said. “We’ve got a pipeline of moisture as you’ve got a half decent low pressure cell pulling that moisture from Vancouver Island through southern British Columbia and right onto our doorstep.”

“When all is said and done it looks like over 20 centimetres by Saturday morning so this isn’t in one fell swoop, it is spread out, it is consistent, we’re not going to be walloped,” explained Schultz.

The snow led to slick conditions overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning with 51 crashes in Calgary between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., 11 of those involving injuries.

Sgt. John James is reminding drivers that intersections and bridge decks are the most treacherous.

“Take your time, leave a lot of space between you and the car ahead of you, plan ahead and make sure you have enough time to get there safely,” he said.

James added if someone doesn’t need to be out, it’s best to just stay at home.
