Motorcyclist dies in hospital after crash in northeast Calgary

Another deadly and dangerous weekend for motorcycle riders, including one who died in hospital after a crash in Calgary’s northeast.

Calgary Police Service said a 67-year-old man driving a Harley Davidson crashed into a Honda Civic at about 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of 68 Street and 22 Avenue.

Investigators believe the man on the motorcycle was travelling south on 68 Street before he collided with the Civic, which was turning left onto 22 Avenue. CPS noted the car made the turn in front of the motorcycle. Officers say the motorcycle hit the side of the Civic and the man was thrown a significant distance.

He suffered serious injuries and died in hospital Sunday morning. Investigators do not believe drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

In a separate incident just before noon Sunday, a motorcycle rider collided with a vehicle on northbound Deerfoot Trail near Glenmore Trail. The 50-year-old man was taken to hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.

It has been a tragic start to the motorcycle season in southern Alberta. Last Saturday, three people were killed in crashes involving motorcycles. One incident involved two deaths near Morley, west of Calgary, the other occurred near Innisfail.
