Property taxes, construction forcing 17th Avenue bar to close down

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — One of the most popular sports bars on 17th Avenue southwest is going to close down at the end of June.

Home and Away, located just off 13th Street along the Red Mile, has been open since 2015 but it was revealed in a Facebook post on Wednesday it will be shuttering due to rising property taxes and construction.

“Over the past couple of years the economic climate has radically changed and we have seen some of our amazing neighbours close their doors. Our property taxes have tripled since 2016 and we are currently facing a road closure in front of H&A for the next 3 months of patio season,” they wrote. “We’ve been doing everything in our power to make it work at our current location but these factors have made us realize this is a battle we just aren’t going to win.”

To celebrate, there will be one more weekend bash from June 28th to 30th.

However, there is still a silver lining, as they hope to re-open in a new location.

“We are currently working hard on a new and improved location with appropriate property taxes and will hope to secure an new spot in time for puck drop and tip off.”

Along with showing everything from Calgary Flames playoff runs, to the Superbowl, to the recent Toronto Raptors NBA Championship the bar was also home to games such as skeeball.
