TORONTO (660 NEWS) — Two key contributors to Cavalry FC‘s memorable inaugural campaign have been recognized by the Canadian Premier League.
Goalkeeper Marco Carducci has captured the Golden Glove Award. The 23-year-old from Calgary made 29 appearances in 2019 and made history by becoming the first CPL player to be called up to the Canadian national team.
“Marco has had an exceptional season and a very worthy recipient of the Golden Glove award,” head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. explained. “He was pivotal in our Spring and Fall season titles, setting a record of shut outs and earning himself a call up to the Canadian National team as further reward of his performances.
“He is very much a modern-day goalkeeper that is calm under chaos and has the ability to start attacks as well as prevent opponents. Credit to him and his goalkeeper coach Jordan Santiago for the work they’ve done this season.”

Wheeldon Jr. was recognized for his efforts behind the bench, winning Coach of the Year. He helped guide his squad to the semi-finals of the Canadian Championship, a run that included a historic upset over the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place.

“Tommy has shown remarkable leadership since being announced as the coach and general manager of Cavalry FC. In a short time, he has created a culture — both on and off the field of play — that has lead to our early success,” Cavalry FC president and COO. Ian Allison stated. “He inspires the players, and everyone in our organization, to bring their very best every day.”
