CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Alberta government is pledging more money to help in the fight against opioid addiction.
Speaking at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre Friday morning, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Jason Luan announced $8 million in new funding for psychosocial supports.
“Our government said we would provide more treatment options to more Albertans who need them and that is what we are doing. We are investing in the entire range of addiction treatment and recovery services to provide more Albertans the opportunity to get on the path to health, wellness and long-term recovery.”
The funding will be spread out over four years, $2 million per year and help increase access to addiction counsellors and therapists.
“Pathways to recovery are paramount to addressing the opioid crisis, and reinforcing these programs, tasked with treating opioid addiction, is another huge step in the right direction for all Albertans. Together, we can change everything,” said Dr. Robert Tanguay with Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Currently, AHS operates 10 opioid dependency clinics in the province including the safe consumption site at Sheldon Chumir.
