EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – The provincial government has set the date for its 2020 budget.
Finance Minister Travis Toews announced Tuesday, the UCP will table its new budget on Feb. 27.
“I have listened to the comments that thousands of Albertans have shared with me and I hear your concerns about the need to continue to create jobs and grow the economy. Budget 2020 will report on our actions to date and our continued efforts to get Albertans back to work,” said Toews.
Toews added the date of the budget will allow time for the government to debate and pass the fiscal plan and give organizations that rely on funding enough time to make their decisions for the year.
“Budget 2020 is a continuation of our commitment to Albertans and the plan set forward in Budget 2019,” said Toews. “We are focused on transforming government programs to eliminate duplication and ensuring realized savings are reinvested into services.”
The first budget under the UCP government was unveiled in Oct. 2019. That plan called for fiscal restraint and cuts to some services.
That budget has been heavily criticized by the Opposition NDP who claimed the budget would have Albertans paying more for necessary services.

Many unions including the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), the United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) and the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) have also criticized the 2019 budget, fearing it could lead to job losses and wage cuts.
Toews said the government received feedback from over 26,000 Albertans through an online survey and two separate telephone town halls.
