CALGARY (CityNews) – One group is raising their voice, standing up to racism and standing in solidarity for people of colour in Canada and across the border.
A physically distanced crowd of Calgarians gathered in support of George Floyd at Fish Creek Park on Sunday.
The rally was organized by the group Rise Up Against Racism.
“We felt it was important we come out and show our support for black lives matter,” said one woman who attended the rally with her daughter.
“It seemed to be more prevalent there, but – as I’ve lived in Canada it’s there and it’s a reality,” said Greg Smith, an American pastor who now calls Calgary home.

The group is hopeful this is the first of many peaceful gatherings, seeking real change by educating Calgarians that everyone has a role to play.
“We don’t experience this with while privilege but when we see it right in our face we can’t not say anything we have to stand up for justice,” said Smith.
“Our message here is simple – examine it, live it, and then we will see things change in the world,” added Mariette Jessup, organizer of Rise Up Against Racism.
Similar rallies are planned for Monday morning at River Walk Plaza and in front of the Alberta legislature.
