Agricultural public speaking competition goes digital

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – An annual public speaking competition where youth talk about agriculture and food is going digital this summer.

The Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture, which normally holds its annual event at the Calgary Stampede, is having competitors submit their videos online amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eric Dalke, the chair of the Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture, says this comes in a time when the hunger for knowledge about how and where food is produced is at its peak.

“Food and agriculture have found themselves at the top of the agenda with respect to what people are talking about and recognizing how important it is.”

He says they are excited about going digital this year.

“I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for youth who might (not have) a lot else to do during summer or (who are) looking for a way to communicate with the world and share their passion for agriculture.”

He says there are seven topics the youth, 11 to 24 in age, will be speaking about.

The full list of topics includes:

1. How can we fill the talent pipeline in Canadian agriculture?

2. What impact will the emerging micro-food processing industry have on agriculture?

3. Aquaculture: The challenges and solutions of developing, funding and marketing an emerging food source

4. Climate change: Can the family farm manage and capitalize on this shift?

5. Lessons learned over the last 25 years of agriculture – and how we can apply it to the next 25.

6. Should the agriculture industry fund and support opportunities for youth development?

7. How to create ecosystem markets that reward Canada’s farmers for environmental stewardship.

All videos must be submitted online by August 15.
