Calgary MP pushes for deeper look into Not Criminally Responsible cases

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A Calgary MP was joined by the families of the victims of the ‘Brentwood Five’ to push for a study of provincial review boards and cases involving those found not criminally responsible.

Stephanie Kusie drafted a motion in parliament to ask the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights to examine decisions made by the boards.

Kusie wants them to examine whether boards are taking public safety into account when releasing those who have killed someone but then deemed not criminally responsible.
Additionally, she wants to determine if the Review Boards are properly identifying high-risk individuals and treating them as such.
The families of the five people stabbed to death at a home in Brentwood in 2014 are concerned the killer, Matthew De Grood, has been allowed more freedoms.
De Grood, who was found not criminally responsible, is due to appear again before the board this fall for an update on his progress.
