Second patient dies from COVID-19 at Foothills hospital, active cases rise to 22

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Two patients are now dead as two units in the Foothills Medical Centre continue to deal with COVID-19 outbreaks.
There is now a total of 22 active cases in the hospital’s cardiac unit and general unit after 16 patients and six staff members tested positive for the illness.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) said in a statement a total of 88 staff are currently in isolation.
The site is using overtime and reassigning members to cover shifts needed.

The first case of the virus was found Friday in the cardiac unit and another case was found in the general unit Saturday.
An investigation is ongoing to determine how the virus was able to enter the building.
AHS says in addition to enhanced screening, cleaning and restricted visitation on the affected units, multiple staff swabbing sites have been set up at the hospital to increase testing capacity.
Any patient with symptoms, or who has tested positive for COVID-19, is isolated and treated in designated rooms.

As of Tuesday, Alberta reported 150 new cases of COVID-19 after completing over 14,000 tests.
Active cases in the province now sit at 1,565, an increase of 106 from Monday.
Active cases by zone:
- Calgary zone: 485
- Edmonton zone: 820
- Central zone: 24
- South zone: 41
- North zone: 188
- Unknown: 7
There are 51 people hospitalized, of those nine are being treated in intensive care.
Two more deaths were reported for a total of 258.
The deaths include A 90-year-old man from the Edmonton zone and a man in his 80s from the Calgary zone, linked to the outbreak at Wentworth Manor.
