Province will maintain 1.5B commitment to Green Line LRT project

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The provincial government will maintain its commitment of the $1.53-billion towards the Green Line LRT project.

Transportation Minister Ric McIver made the announcement on Facebook but said the review of the train line outlined a number of concerns including costs, contingencies, governance structure, and the overall procurement strategy.

“Albertans expect that the city and province will conduct the necessary due diligence when it comes to this jointly-funded project,” a letter addressed to Calgary from McIver said.

“I am asking the city to work with the province to take the required time to work through the proposed project, governance, and procurement structure to ensure that the project team is properly managing risk while delivering the right outcome for taxpayers.”

Mayor Naheed Nenshi appreciated the continued commitment saying in a tweet the project will provide jobs to thousands of people while also delivering public transit infrastructure that is in high demand.

“The City of Calgary has a track record over the past 10 years of building major infrastructure projects on time and on budget, and that record is not something we take lightly,” Nenshi said in a letter.

“We are committed to working with our partners at the provincial and federal governments so that all parties are comfortable that the Green Line can be delivered effectively and efficiently.”

Calgary city council approved the $5.5-billion project in June after working on the plan for nearly a decade.

Once the project was approved by council, McIver wrote a letter to the mayor saying he supported the project but needed to conduct a review before making its final decision.
