Sticker shock returns at the pumps as Calgary gas prices soar

The roller coaster at the gas pumps continued for Calgarians on Wednesday.

Gasoline prices jumped overnight to an average over $1.80 per litre at most stations, a spike of nearly 20 cents since Tuesday.

Stations that were selling gas for roughly $1.55 per litre just days ago are now approaching $1.85 per litre.

The sudden surge comes as global oil markets react to ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping traffic remains largely halted.

The bottleneck in the Strait has pushed West Texas Intermediate up by more than $7, climbing past $107 U.S. a barrel.

The surge in prices comes on the heels of the federal government pausing its 10‑cent‑per‑litre gas tax just last week. The Alberta government has said it will not adjust its own gas‑tax formula.

Drivers could see as much as 13 cents per litre in provincial relief in July if oil stays above $90 U.S. a barrel.
