First COVID-19 vaccines administered in Calgary and Edmonton

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A registered nurse and a respiratory therapist are the first two Albertans to receive the new Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
“I understand, the first to receive it, just received the vaccine moments ago was respiratory therapist, Sahra Kaahiya at Edmonton’s University of Alberta hospital and that Intensive Care Nurse Tanya Harvey at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary is also receiving the vaccine,” said Premier Jason Kenney during Tuesday’s provincial COVID-19 update.

Harvey and Kaahiya received their vaccinations at around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The first shipments of the vaccine arrived in Calgary Monday.
“As you know, last night, the first 3,900 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived at the Calgary International Airport, and I was excited to be there in person to see that happy day finally come.”

“They have been transported to distribution centres unfrozen,” added Kenney
Another 25,300 doses of the Pfizer vaccine are expected to be administered within the next week Kenney said, and the first shipments of the Moderna vaccines are expected to arrive by next week as well.
“This is all wonderfully good news, hope is here, and the end of this terrible time is finally within sight.”
By the end of the month, the province hopes to have almost 30,000 health care workers vaccinated.
