CALGARY (660 NEWS) – After Calgary was rocked by an overnight snowstorm before Christmas, two city councillors are trying to make it easier for the city to respond to major snowfalls.
Ward 6 Councillor Jeff Davison and Ward 1 Councillor Ward Sutherland are proposing making updates to the Snow and Ice Control policy.
Currently, in order for resources to be unlocked to clear roads and walkways, Calgary must declare a “snow emergency”.
Davison and Sutherland say it is too long of a process to deal with every time Calgary has a significant snowfall.
Press Release: many Calgarians are rightfully upset with the City’s snow clearing efforts following our last major snowfall.
That's why I'm proposing changes to the City's Snow and Ice Control policy. https://t.co/aOpFs3NL10 #yyc #yyccc #SnowandIce #Calgary

“Many Calgarians are rightfully upset with the city’s snow clearing efforts following our last major snowfall,” said Davison. “To hear that a bureaucratic technicality limited our snow response is unacceptable. This proposal will address Administrations ability to work quickly, and within their best professional judgement, to provide service to all Calgarians.”
The councillors cite the anger and frustration of Calgarians as the reason for the proposed changes, which would eliminate the red tape and allow the city to act when we get hit with a hard snowfall.
Davison and Sutherland will present the proposal to the Priorities and Finance Committee on Jan. 12.
