Alberta reports 1,412 new COVID-19 cases, 778 variant cases identified

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Alberta has identified 1,412 new cases of COVID-19, with 778 of those being variants of concern.
Of the variant cases identified, 740 are the B.1.1.7 strain, 36 are the P.1 strain, and two are the B.1.351 strain.
As of Wednesday, variant cases make up 52.6 per cent of all active cases in Alberta.

Currently, there are 15,569 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, with 8,197 active variant cases.
Hospitalizations rose slightly to 420 on Wednesday, with 92 people now in the ICU.
An additional eight deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the last day as well.

Though the province saw a slight increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, Alberta’s hospital bed capacity now sits at 83 per cent.
On a positive note, vaccinations saw a good jump over the last 24 hours, with 39,674 doses administered.
Around 191,000 Albertans have been fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw did not provide a live update on COVID-19 Wednesday. Her next scheduled update is set for Thursday afternoon.
