Police seek man after random stabbing downtown

CALGARY — Calgary police are searching for a man after he randomly stabbed a woman downtown on Tuesday.

Around 11:40 p.m., the woman was standing on the corner of 7 Avenue and 1 Street S.W. when a man came up from behind her and stabbed her several times.

After stabbing the woman, the man ran and the woman called for help.

Officers were able to provide first-aid to the woman and she was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Police believe the attack was random as the two aren’t known to each other and there was no prior interaction.

Police searched for the man but were unable to locate him.

CCTV photos of the suspect are now being released in the hopes that someone may be able to identify him.

“The CCTV photos we were able to find are clear. Someone out there will know who this person is. Rest assured we will find this person and we will hold him accountable for this completely unacceptable violence,” says District 1 Insp. Clare Smart in a release. “Everyone has the right to move freely about our downtown without the fear or threat of violence. This behaviour is not tolerated, and we will put a stop to it.”

He is described as around 5’6″ tall, with a slim build, and blonde or light-brown hair.

He was wearing a black and white Metallica T-shirt, black shorts, white sneakers and a grey coat with a black and red stripe through it.

Anyone who may have information is being asked to contact police.
