CALGARY — Ward 1 Councillor Ward Sutherland will not be running in this year’s municipal election, opening up another spot on city council.
Sutherland announced on Tuesday afternoon that he would be backing out of the race and will instead be spending his time and energy supporting his colleague Jeff Davison’s bid for mayor.
“What’s critical now, is having the right leader for the right time, and I can say as a councillor, I have worked with all the candidates that are running, and I am confident, and it was an easy decision for me to support Jeff,” said Sutherland.

Sutherland has served in the northwest Calgary ward for two terms and says a lot of good work has been done, but this is more about focusing on the future of the city as a whole.
“This is a historic time for the City of Calgary, we are going to have over ten new councillors, and right now people have asked about change, change has already happened, it’s going to happen.”

This now makes nine incumbent councillors who will not be seeking re-election in the vote, and there will also be a new mayor with Naheed Nenshi not seeking a fourth term.
Councillors Jyoti Gondek and Jeromy Farkas are also in the running for mayor.
