Dry summer leading to drop in mosquito numbers in Calgary

CALGARY — According to Calgary’s Pest Management, the city is seeing a drop in mosquito numbers, and it could be attributed to the dry conditions we’re experiencing.

Workers who handle mosquito traps throughout the city say even the traps aren’t capturing many of the pests.

“Just to give an example, in a typical year we’d probably get a few hundred mosquitoes from those traps this time of year, and I think I’ve got about five or six this week,” said Alexandra Pepperdine. “That’s quite low. Leading up to this, I’d maybe get one or less than one (mosquito) per trap.”

However, Pepperdine says some areas of the city are seeing more mosquitos because of low-lying areas where water remained after some recent thunderstorms.

Even then, she says it doesn’t compare to year’s past.

“It’s still actually lower than what we’d see in a typical year.”

The lack of mosquitos is not only a good thing for the skin of Calgarians but also the helicopters the city contracts to spray mosquitos as they are extra busy this year due to all the wildfires.
