COVID-19 related deaths jump for second straight weekend, ICU admissions reach record high

The province identifies 4,740 new cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. Record numbers for intensive care admissions were announced Monday as protestors gathered outside of hospitals across the country.

CALGARY — Alberta reported another high death count due to COVID-19 this past weekend.

Over the last three days, there have been 18 more deaths reported in the province from the virus.

This now raises the total death count in Alberta to 2,462.

As for new case numbers, the province reported 4,740 new cases over the weekend.

The breakdown of new cases is as follows:

  • 1,659 identified on Friday;
  • 1,4897 identified on Saturday;
  • 1,584 identified on Sunday

 

There are now 803 people in hospital with COVID-19, 198 of which are in the ICU.

The ICU admissions reported in Alberta on Monday are the highest the province has seen to date.

Meanwhile, the 803 people in hospital is the highest in the province since Jan. 8.

Currently, there are 18,395 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — an increase of 2,130 from Friday’s update.

As for vaccination numbers in the province, 79.2 per cent of those 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine, while 71.2 per cent are fully vaccinated.

To date, more than 5.65 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.
