Delivery on Deerfoot: Baby born during evening rush hour

It wasn’t the delivery they were hoping for, but both mom and baby Clover are healthy and happy after Clover decided to arrive on Deerfoot Trail -- with the midwife getting there just in time to catch her.

CALGARY (CityNews) — It might not be the story parents imagine explaining when asked about the birth of their child, but one Calgary couple will have an interesting tale to tell for years to come.

Ashley Haldane says she felt the contractions getting closer, and she and her husband headed to the hospital just after 7 p.m.

“We could see the signs for the Barlow [Trail] turn off and I told my husband, you’ve got to pull over right now — this baby’s not waiting.”

While Ashley was on the phone with her midwife her husband called 911.

Pulled over on the side of the road, Ashley says it was her husband who helped most to deliver their child while she was in the front seat of their SUV.

She handed her husband the phone with her midwife on the line and focused on the urgent task at hand.

“She was trying to guide him through, and just as the baby finished coming out at 7:45 p.m., my midwife ran in and caught her, essentially at the last minute.”

First responders did make it to the couple and their new baby to make sure everyone was healthy and delivered the newly-born Clover a stuffed animal to take home with her.

As you might expect, Ashley says the couple was not prepared to give birth halfway to the hospital, but both mom and baby Clover are recovering happily at home.
