New faces at city council: Ward 3’s Jasmine Mian

There are plenty of new faces on Calgary’s city council. Tara Overholt finds out what former Olympian wrestler Jasmine Mian plans to tackle at city hall.

She has represented Canada at the Olympics, and now Jasmine Mian represents Calgary’s Ward 3 at city council.

The wrestler, who competed at the 2016 games, says her athletic training will help her at City Hall.

“It’s about people and relationships. My background in sport, understanding teamwork, what makes people tick, how can we get the best outcomes that everyone feels they are a part of something – I think that’s the thing that I’ll bring to the table that is most useful.”

Mian moved to Calgary about a decade ago to pursue her Olympic dreams and fell in love with the city

“I fell in love with our spirit of wanting to win, but also being very charitable”.

With her background in sports, access to recreation, especially for kids, is one of her main priorities, as is the Green Line LRT project.

“It’s important for equity. So many people don’t have more than one car, and they rely on our transit system.”

Mian also holds a master’s in public policy with a focus on municipal issues and is ready to tackle major issues like economic recovery.
