Community and connection drives Kourtney Penner. The newly-elected councillor for Ward 11 has spent years as a community organizer including work with Haysboro Community Association.
“After years in my community, working on different projects, being on committees at the city, I started recognizing there was a gap that could be filled around how we work with volunteer organizations and non-profits at the community level.”

Calling herself a great people connector, Penner is looking forward to getting to know her new colleagues on council and getting to work on small projects like pedestrian safety and ring road noise, to bigger challenges like energy transition.
“Yes, we need to move to being a more climate-resilient city. Can we just flip the switch and leave a whole bunch of people who are still reliant on the oil and gas sector for employment behind? No, we can’t. We have to talk about what that transition looks like, and talk to them and bring all parties to the table.”
