Edson store employee killed in botched robbery

EDSON — RCMP are asking for help finding a suspect after a fatal robbery attempt in a community west of Edmonton on Thursday.

At around 5:30 p.m., a suspect entered a store on 50 St. in Edson carrying a weapon. While trying to rob the store, the gun went off and an employee was hit.

The victim was rushed to hospital, but later died.

“The suspect was unsuccessful in the robbery attempt, they did flee the business leaving the firearm behind and departed in a vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle was located a short distance away unoccupied,” said RCMP Cpl. Tammy Keibel.

Despite the assistance of RCMP Police Dog Services and other officers, the suspect could not be located and no description is available at this time.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation, with the assistance of Edson RCMP.

An autopsy will be completed next week.

If you have any information on the incident, contact police or Crime Stoppers.
