Calgary hit by heavy snowfall, Environment Canada issues warning

Environment Canada says Calgary is under a snowfall warning and can expect around 15 to 25 centimetres on Tuesday, with the precipitation tapering off by Wednesday morning.

The weather agency says visibility can be near zero with white-out conditions in heavy snow.

Environment Canada also says the north side of Calgary, near the airport, has received just under 10 centimetres, while the south end is dealing with flurries, but no accumulation.

The snowfall has disrupted traffic and RCMP recommends staying off the roads if you can, but if you must drive, make sure you have your lights on, and drive according to the conditions.

“Even in really treacherous road conditions, we see people going above speed limits,” Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said. “Everyone just needs to get along, get to where they are going safely and slow down.”

The City of Calgary says crews are out sanding and plowing roads to keep the drive as safe as possible, and in the meantime, street sweeping is on hold. The city says if your street was scheduled to be swept today and wasn’t, it will be rescheduled to later this spring.
