What are the chances the Oilers and Flames meet in the NHL playoffs?

Hockey fans in Alberta have a lot to celebrate.

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames have locked up spots in this upcoming post-season.

The Flames sit atop the Pacific Division with a 49-20-10 record. They became the third Western Conference club to nail down a playoff spot last weekend.

The Oilers (46-26-6), second in the division, needed an extra week to clinch with a commanding win over the Western Conference-leading Colorado Avalanche on Friday.

That has some fans praying for a Battle of Alberta at some point in the playoffs.

“Both teams are fantastic, they play completely different styles and they’re at each other’s throats,” said Karim Kurji, founder of The Win Column. “It’s a ton of fun. My fingers are crossed that it happens.”

But what are the actual odds they meet up in the playoffs? Pretty good, says the founder of Money Puck.

“So it’s very, very likely,” said Peter Tanner. “There’s a 41 per cent chance they’ll meet in the second round.”

The Oilers and Flames have met five times in the post-season in the 1980s and early ‘90s. Edmonton took all of those series except for one, in which they scored on themselves in Game 7 to give the Flames the series victory.

Flames fans are feeling more confident this time around, with several telling CityNews they would triumph in a potential provincial matchup.

Some hockey data analysts seem to back up that claim.

“The Flames would be the 65 per cent chance favourites of advancing to the conference finals,” said Tanner.

The Flames and Oilers have four of the top goal scorers in the league: Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk on the Flames, and Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the Oilers.

“Regardless of who wins that, it will probably be talked about for a long, long time,” said Kurji.
