Albertans can ride bikes on the Bow Valley Parkway starting Sunday

Parks Canada will be restricting drivers on a section of the Bow Valley Parkway beginning Sunday for what it calls an enhanced cycling experience, as a part of a three-year pilot program from 2022 to 2024.

Vehicle traffic will be restricted on the 17-kilometre stretch on the eastern side of the Bow Valley Parkway between the Fireside Day-use Area and Johnston Canyon in the spring and fall to make room for cyclists.

The traffic changes run from May 1 to June 25 and from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“You can park in Banff at the train station and make your way and follow the signage to connect to the Bow Valley Parkway itself,” Daniella Rubeling, visitor experience manager with Parks Canada, said. “We also want people to know that vehicle access to Johnston Canyon’s day-use area and campground will still remain accessible throughout this offer via Castle Junction.”

Rubeling says to be prepared if you are going to make the trip.

“It is the spring, so weather can be variable. We have wildlife out so make sure you bring your bear spray,” Rubeling said. “Know a little bit of basic bike maintenance, because there aren’t a lot of facilities along that stretch of roadway and people need to be self-sustainable.”

Parks Canada also notes that the seasonal travel restrictions on the same section of the road to provide more space for wildlife will still be in effect for all people, including cyclists and hikers, from Mar. 1 to June 25, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
