Thousands of dollars raised after woman killed in Calgary ‘road rage shooting’

A fundraiser for a woman killed in what Calgary police have described as a “road rage shooting” late Tuesday has raised thousands of dollars in support of her young family.

According to a GoFundMe page, the “innocent woman that tragically passed away in a fatal crash in Forest Lawn” was a mother of five who was on her way to see her children.

The campaign for Angela Mckenzie had raised more than $22,000 as of Wednesday night, just hours after the GoFundMe was launched.

“The circumstances of Angela’s passing is being speculated as road rage, still, regardless of the circumstances, a single-mother of 5 children, ranging from ages 8 to 17, didn’t make it home to her family due to the recklessness caused by others,” the page reads.

According to CPS, multiple vehicles crashed and gunshots rang out in the Forest Lawn area of 17 Avenue SE and 36 Street SE around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Two vehicles, a red Chevrolet Silverado and a grey Volkswagen Jetta, were chasing each other down southbound 36 Street SE with the people inside firing at each other. When they got to the intersection of 17 Avenue, the Silverado struck a silver van that was trying to make a turn.

The collision sent the van careening into a nearby parking lot, while the occupants in the other vehicles reportedly got out and continued shooting.

A man and a woman who were in the truck fled the scene, while the man in the Jetta suffered gunshot wounds and was eventually taken to the hospital.

Amid the carnage, police say a 40-year-old woman in the van was severely injured and died at the scene. It is unclear if she died from gunshot wounds or a result of the collision. An autopsy will be performed.

According to the GoFundMe page, the woman’s family also lost their father just months ago, in February.

It goes on to say the children “have all gone through so much with the loss of their father,” and that the loss of their mother at this time “is unfathomable.”

Calgary police are looking to speak with any potential witnesses.

“This reckless behaviour has no room on our city’s streets,” Superintendent Scott Boyd with the Calgary Police Service said Wednesday afternoon.

“The actions and behaviour of these individuals led to the death of a woman we believe to be completely innocent in this matter. A woman who will now be mourned by her family and friends, and it breaks our heart to think about.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
