‘Bad breath’ lemonade, anyone? The Calgary Stampede has some strange new food on its menu

By Joey Chini and The Canadian Press

Would you try pizza with cow tongue on it? How about honey habanero popsicles? Or popcorn chicken dipped in Pop Rocks candy?

This summer’s Calgary Stampede food menu has some strange and spicy twists on traditional favourites.

Forty new food items will be offered at the annual rodeo and exhibition, and the full menu ranges from the traditional to downright outlandish. There are regular hot dogs and mealworm hot dogs; regular lemonade and “bad breath lemonade” with garlic and onion; and regular mini doughnuts and maple-glazed Oreo doughnuts.

Other extraordinary highlights include cotton candy noodles, glazed doughnut grilled cheese sandwiches, and Kraft dinner soft-serve ice cream.

Among the most bizzare creations: the “Korean squid ink corn dogs,” which are half hot dog, half mozzarella dipped in black batter to resemble tentacles.

Although some of the foods featured could be considered nightmare-fuel (cricket hot dogs come to mind), there are more than a few that appear genuinely tasty and are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Waffle cookie dough ice cream sandwiches, lemon meringue lychee lemonade, and good old fashioned samosas on a stick are available for those less-willing to foray into the uncommon flavour profiles that Stampede has to offer.

All of the items will be available at the Stampede grounds during the 10-day event.

“The spectacular and inventive dishes brought to the midway every year truly make the Calgary Stampede experience fun and memorable,” Kyle Russell, director of programming said.

“The culinary experience is a ‘must-do.'”

The Calgary Stampede runs from July 8 to July 17.
