Executive Director of KidSport Alberta, Greg Ingalls, got emotional when he talked about how KidSport helped a teen join a football team some 20 years ago.

“It was a $120 registration fee for football and he played all three years. He’s pretty good at football. And he got a scholarship to the University of Alberta, played there and got his accounting degree and now he is now the treasurer of the Kidsport Society of Alberta,” said Ingalls.

About half of the money will go to support about 7,000 kids with registration costs for sports programs across Alberta.

Culture minister Ron Orr was at the Genesis Centre in Northeast Calgary to explain how the funding is being divided up.

“Of that $4 million dollars, a total of $2.1 million will be directed towards 140 non-profits and few for-profit organizations in the form of grants up to $15,000 dollars,” said Orr.

The rest of the funding will be used by Kidsport Alberta to distribute up to $250 per child to assist with registration costs for sports programs across Alberta.

Applications for both open on June 29.
