Construction worker falls down 25 foot shaft in Calgary

A man fell down a shaft in Calgary, tumbling nearly 25 feet Wednesday morning.

The fall happened around 11 a.m., where Calgary fire crews, including their technical response team, arrived on 17 Avenue SW in the Radisson Heights area.

Calgary fire say that a construction worker fell down the concrete shaft, about 25 feet below street level.

Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department says they had to set-up a tripod to lower the paramedics into the shaft and rescue the man.

“We did an air monitoring down there as well to ensure that it was a stable environment,” Henke said.

She says the man was secured before being lifted up, where he was then transported to hospital. He was rushed there under serious condition, Henke saying it was with “significant injuries.”

Henke adds that Occupational Health and Safety has been called to the scene to investigate the accident.
