Calgary’s MOMMS hosting pet food drive for vets

Calgary’s MOMMS Premium Pet Foods is hosting a pet food drive in support of the Veterans Association Food Bank Saturday.

MOMMS says you can bring bags of dog food that have been properly sealed, buy a bag of dog food to be donated, or simply give some cash to support the cause.

The store has chosen to support the Veterans Association Food Bank because of high demand and because many vets rely on their pets for comfort, it says.

Chris Malmberg, the owner of MOMMS, says the store raised about 9,000 pounds of pet food during the three previous times the store held drives.

“A lot of people when they think of these organizations, they’re bringing in food for humans, but they don’t realize that a lot of these people — especially the veterans — have their dogs and their cats,” Malmberg said. “A lot of these people rely on their dogs and their cats for peace of mind, for some of the struggles they’re having inside. … If they have troubles feeding themselves, they have troubles feeding their dogs and their cats.”

Malmberg adds it amazes him how generous Calgarians have been with their donations in the past. He says people from across the city participate and give whatever they can to support veterans.

“They need supplies too, whether it’s collars, leashes, toys, anything of that sort,” he explained. “The Calgary Veterans Association basically has a part of their organization that is not only for food, but is also for supplies… anything that’s required to take care of a dog or a cat.”

The pet food store, which is just off of Acadia Drive SE south of Lake Bonavista Drive SE, will be accepting donations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
