Calgary snowfall warning ends, cold temperatures settle in

Calgary is experiencing its coldest weather in over half a year with the wind chill and snow wreaking chaos.

Calgarians are dealing with frigid winter conditions Tuesday morning, but the snowfall warning in place since Monday has come to an end.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says just under 10 centimetres of snow fell in the city Monday.

Tuesday, Calgary is expecting a high temperature of -15 and a low of -23.

However, the wind chill — blowing at 15km/hr — is making it feel closer to -30.

The weather agency adds there is a risk of frostbite, which can cause permanent damage if not treated right away.

The roads can be very dangerous in heavy snow, with reduced visibility and low surface traction, that’s especially true with icy conditions reported on several streets across the city.

Chris McGeachy, spokesperson for the City of Calgary, says crews are applying abrasives like sand and gravel to improve traction on major roadways.

“Typically, [we’re] laying those on trouble spots that can include bridges, hills, intersections,” he explained.

It’s not just slippery on the roads, it’s icy on walkways as well. Paramedics tell CityNews conditions are ripe for an increase in the number of slips and falls they respond to.

Stuart Brideau, spokesperson for EMS, says it’s important to wear proper footwear and consider the way you walk when heading outdoors in winter weather to avoid falling down and potentially hurting yourself.

“AHS likes to advocate what penguins have known for millions of years, and that is to walk like a penguin,” Brideau explained. “If you lower your centre of gravity and use shortened, shuffled steps, that decreases your chances of slipping.”
