Calgary daycare shut down by Alberta government

A daycare in Calgary’s northeast has been shut down after Children’s Services found a dozen violations of provincial rules.

The Alberta government website’s Child Care Lookup tool shows Kidzee daycare’s licence was cancelled on Friday.

The daycare is said to have broken 12 government regulations including rules around minimum staffing and general supervision, inflicting physical punishment, and food and nutrition.

In a statement, Kidzee says it is “facing the consequences of a few irresponsible staff members that were all certified by Alberta licensing to work in childcare,” who have since been fired.

“We believe parents and childcare providers have a joint responsibility for the well-being of every child and we will continue to play our part. Even after the cancelation of our license we will continue to fight for every child to make sure that all responsible educators are reprimanded and their certifications revoked. Closing a center cannot be the solution if the same educators responsible for the infractions are simply able to continue to work in childcare elsewhere,” the statement continues.

“Though Alberta licensing closed down the center, they failed to mention any responsible staff members or acknowledge that these individuals were appropriately certified. We urge you to consider that not all staff/operators are the same, even in light of a 3-week investigation and immense added pressure, all remaining staff members worked exceptionally hard till the last day to take care of every child at the Center.”

The province says the daycare has until Jan. 21 to adhere to childcare rules.
