Music, dancing, and performances are all bonuses of the Super Bowl. This year, an Indigenous Albertan is in the spotlight with a dance at Sunday’s game.

“Honestly, when I got the call about two weeks, kind of it didn’t set in,” said Patrick Mitsuing, performing at Super Bowl.

Mitsuing is a champion fancy dancer. He’s proud to represent at the biggest sporting event of the year.

“I feel very honored, very feel very blessed to represent our people back home and kind of still grasping how big of a deal this is.”

Mitsuing is a member of the Cree Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation. He tells CityNews he worked his whole life for a moment like this.

“As soon as I hear that drum, though, all my emotions fade and I realize like, this is what I’ve been doing my whole life. I’ve been preparing for this moment for forever,” he explained.

Mitsuing will share the spotlight on Indigenous issues at the game in Phoenix. There will be a land acknowledgment to recognize the land the Super Bowl is being played on.

“The amount of things that they’ve been doing include indigenous people is really cool to see.”

The Super Bowl has a huge audience worldwide. Mitsuing sees how the spotlight could honor indigenous culture globally.

“An experience ill remember for the rest of my life that’s for sure.”
